Rise Of The Mobile Machines

The past two weeks I spent a fair amount of time sharing the importance of getting your website mobile friendly to avoid being penalized by Google mobile search:

Hopefully by now you’re positive that your website passes Google’s test:

If you missed all of that, and your website fails the test, please go through the posts and get your website mobile-friendly.

The Future Of Mobile

Chances are you spend almost as much time on your mobile devices today, if not more, than you do on your desktop computers. Smartphones are awesome and getting even faster and easier to use as they evolve from the 3G network world to the 4G one.

If you’re an analytical numbers-person you’ll be glad to know, according to Cisco, that by 2018 global mobile data traffic will reach an annual run rate of 190 exabytes per year, up from 18 exabytes in 2013. For those less numbers-inclined, like me, an exabyte is equal to one billion gigabytes. If that number still doesn’t compute for you just safely assume this: its a shitload.

More data from Cisco’s 2019 mobile-market forecasts:

  • Globally, mobile data traffic will grow 10-fold from 2014 to 2019, a compound annual growth rate of 57%.
  • Globally, mobile data traffic will reach 24.3 Exabytes per month by 2019 (the equivalent of 6,079 million DVDs each month), up from 2.5 Exabytes per month in 2014.
  • Globally, mobile data traffic will reach an annual run rate of 291.8 Exabytes by 2019, up from 30.3 Exabytes in 2014.
  • Global mobile data traffic will grow 3 times faster than global fixed IP traffic from 2014 to 2019.
  • Globally, mobile data traffic will account for 15% of global fixed and mobile data traffic by 2019, up from 4% in 2014.
  • Globally, mobile data traffic by 2019 will be equivalent to 266x the volume of global mobile traffic ten years earlier (in 2009).
  • Globally, 54% of mobile connections will be ‘smart’ connections by 2019, up from 26% in 2014.
  • Globally, 59% of mobile connections (excluding LPWA) will be ‘smart’ connections by 2019, up from 26% in 2014.
  • Globally, 97% of mobile data traffic will be ‘smart’ traffic by 2019, up from 88% in 2014.
  • Globally, mobile traffic per mobile-connected end-user device will reach 2,807 megabytes per month by 2019, up from 359 megabytes per month in 2014, a CAGR of 51%.
  • Globally, mobile traffic per mobile connection (including M2M/LPWA) will reach 2,120 megabytes per month by 2019, up from 339 megabytes per month in 2014, a CAGR of 44%.
  • Globally, mobile traffic per user will reach 4,406 megabytes per month by 2019, up from 585 megabytes per month in 2014, a CAGR of 52%.
  • Globally, mobile traffic per capita will reach 3,183 megabytes per month by 2019, up from 348 megabytes per month in 2014, a CAGR of 56%.
  • Globally, mobile busy hour traffic will be 84% higher than average hour traffic by 2019, compared to 64% in 2014.*

What this all means is that you really need to pay close attention to all things mobile going forward. I plan to keep you informed from what I hear as we move through 2015 and beyond since mobile is clearly the future of affiliate marketing.
