Why Article Directories Are Dead
Article directories used to be a great way to get your content out into your marketplace, demonstrate your expertise, build links, and draw valuable traffic back to your site.
Article directories are identified by several other terms as well including:
- PDF networks
- eBook Directories
- Content Portals
- PDF Galleries
Several years ago most internet marketers utilized this source and found it a solid method to generate both links and traffic back to their sites.
So What Went Wrong?
In short, people got lazy. The quality of content on article directory sites went south as more and more people jumped on board the article directory traffic express. Instead of compelling original articles that were once prevalent, the norm became plagiarised copies that were poorly written and unoriginal. This practice further degenerated into mostly spammy and duplicate content.
Matt Cutts from Google explains:
While Matt doesn’t actually say it, he seems to hint that not only will article directory links not boost your site in the search engines but may actually penalize or discriminate against it.
So despite what you may read elsewhere, article directory link building is dead.
Google still loves well-written original content. So instead of posting your content on 3rd party directories spend your time making it as useful (as in tutorials) and shareable as possible and you’ll get the valuable links you’re looking for.
