A Word About Affiliate Terms Of Use

Each affiliate network and merchant will have program conditions called terms of use.  I know you won’t want to hear this but it’s imperative to read these agreements prior to promoting any affiliate program.  Especially if you enjoy getting paid for your hard work.

I have a colleague who lost thousands of dollars in earned commissions simply because he failed to read the terms of use for an affiliate program he was promoting.  The mistake he made was simply using email marketing for making offers which wasn’t allowed under this specific merchant’s terms of use.  When they found out they essentially banned him from participating in the program and kept all unpaid commissions that were due.  Don’t let this happen to you.

When you sign up and promote any affiliate program you’re agreeing to comply with their terms of use and it is a legally binding document so make sure you know what you’re signing up for.  These terms will include information such as promotional rules and restrictions, cookie duration, return or refund policies, and payment provisions.  Read them and ask questions if anything is unclear to you.

Incidentally, when I refer to affiliate network I’m talking about companies such as Clickbank, ShareASale, and Commission Junction.  These networks are mediators that list hundreds of individual affiliate programs you can choose from.  They each will have their own terms of use.

In addition, and this is important, each affiliate merchant within these networks will also have their own affiliate program agreements that you’ll need to read.  These will be rules of engagement for just their program on top of the network’s terms of use.  So read them and understand them.
